Context
The Map of Violence Against Women in Alagoas (2023) raised a critical alert: while femicide cases have decreased, reports of domestic violence and rape have increased—and 78% of rape survivors were under the age of 18. These findings expose how violence affects girls and women early and persistently, with lifelong consequences.
In this context, schools play a vital role in prevention. They are powerful spaces for building a culture of respect, equality, and care. With this vision, the Government of Alagoas signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement with Serenas to create a project focused on preventing gender-based violence in the education system.

Our work
In partnership with the State Department of Education (SEDUC-AL) and the Department for Women and Human Rights (SEMUDH-AL), Serenas led a series of initiatives to strengthen the connection between the education and human rights sectors in Alagoas. These included training sessions for technical teams from both departments and tailored advisory support.
We also developed an informative guide for educators, available in a digital and publicly accessible format. To broaden the initiative’s reach, we co-hosted a webinar alongside SEDUC-AL and SEMUDH-AL, reinforcing institutional engagement and the importance of collaborative, cross-sector solutions.
